COLLABORATION PROCESS

JOE BISHARA, director of the Abbey Theater of Dublin, decided to produce Vidas Barzdukas original play THE WITCH OF NOVEMBER to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior.

The play goes back and forth in time and location, from the “In Between,” the pilothouse of the ship, and in the captain’s memories of his shore life with his wife. Joe gave C.G. Ryan the job of designing a set that would accommodate projections to clarify time and place, as well as dynamically simulate the shipboard storm experience for the audience. C.G. worked closely with IZ NICHOLS, lighting designer, DAVID CRONE, sound engineer, and TYLER NEWBY, animator, to create a cohesive and immersive production design.

Production Stills:

“The astonishing media designs by C.G. Ryan not only do a brilliant job of implying dread, the power and majest of the sea, the gauzy warmth of memory, a sense of epic scope and claustrophobia, but they do it without ever feeling hokey. I found myself literally shifting back and forth in my seat as though I were at sea. It's the single technical element of anything I've seen on stage all year that I'm going be be carrying with me for a very long time because it carried so much psychological and emotional weight.” — RICHARD SANFORD, Columbus Underground
