COLLABORATION PROCESS

Originally produced for Broadway, FUN HOME – MUSICAL was developed without utilizing Alison Bechdel’s illustration work from the source work graphic novel. Director Joe Bishara’s vision for the Evolution Theatre production that used illustration for the set design and animation for musical numbers, while respecting copyright.

Joe approached C.G. with the challenge of being true to the intent of the autobiographical story, but developing a unique graphic style. C.G. researched Alison Bechdel’s actual home (now a vacation rental with photos online), her college and appearance in the 1980s, as well as the East Village in the 1970s. The graphic novel did not use color, but C.G. envisioned color being an important emotional signifier that would change during different character transitions as well as clarify “split screen” phone conversation scenes.

Production Stills:

“This Fun Home does an astonishing job of highlighting the vital power of art and memory to make sense of the past and their limitations... the progression of the Abbey's work with projections and video rises to new heights. The screens here let us see these memories come to life with lines appearing, undulating, and being obliterated through C.G. Ryan's astonding production design." — RICHARD SANFORD, Columbus Underground
