AbioGenesis: An Origin Story

JAMIE HARPER was working on his thesis honors project in Theatre Arts at The Ohio State University and staged a series of workshops “Conscious Play” to explore concepts for the production. C.G. RYAN participated and she and offered to contribute video art to support his autobiographical project “AbioGenesis: An Origin Story.”

C.G. collaborated with Jamie to create a projection design that combined visual influences accurate to his life story (design influences by time period) with an overall sketch-style illustration aesthetic for creating the locations. C.G. researched art therapy journaling examples from mental health programs to create a sense of seeing through Jamie’s recovery process. The result was playful, dreamlike personal visual style, combining video movement scenes with set illustrations that transformed in visual tone and content with Jamie’s state of mind.
